If you have a new pair of real mukluks, it's important to know how to properly take care of them before you start wearing them out in winter conditions. Routine care and maintenance of your new handmade mukluks will keep them looking and feeling amazing for several seasons. If you want to protect and lengthen the life of your traditional mukluks as well as enhance the quality of the leather and fur they are made of, then take a look at how we suggest to properly care for your Native Indian mukluks.

The biggest difference between caring for genuine mukluks and any other style of traditional moccasins or sheepskin products, is that they usually have rabbit fur trim or pom poms on the outside. You may treat and care for the leather or suede as usual by spraying those portions with TANA All Protector, to add to the longevity of the mukluks and create a water resistant barrier. However, it is important to make sure that you do not spray the fur portions because it contains its own natural oils that should not be tampered with. For a more detailed look at how to protect the exterior leather or suede of your stylish mukluks, take a look at one of recent blogs that explains How To Protect Your New Leather Moccasins.

If the fur around your mukluk becomes dirty it can simply be wiped off with a dry or damp cloth. Otherwise you can lightly spray it with cold water and wipe clean as necessary with a sponge. However, be careful not to soak the fur entirely. Next, you can gently dry the fur using the air setting of a hair dryer while softly fluffing the fur with your fingers. Then, allow the fur to set and it should look fluffy and clean again. Never brush the fur because it could possibly fall out.

If your traditional mukluks are sheepskin or fleece lined, you can carefully wash the inside liners using a non-detergent soap such as Kookaburra Sheepskin Wash. Allow them to dry in a warm place and then condition the leather as necessary. For more information regarding cleaning and care of sheepskin see our recent blog entitled How to Properly Clean Sheepskin in 5 Easy Steps.

In response to Dawn S.: I would not risk machine washing mukluks. The real rabbit fur would get damaged along with the suede. I would recommend you first treat them with a leather protector and spot clean any stains.

My wife spilled some Champange on her untreated rabbit fur mukluks and we don’t know how to effectively clean them without risking damaging them. They have, we think, rabbit fur outside with matching pom poms on the draw string. Any help as these are starting to smell?

In response to Virginia: I’m not sure we know the answer to this question. Perhaps there is a local cobbler you could ask?

We were passed down an old pair of Kamala with a hard sole from bearded seal. How do we preserve the soles?

In response to Lynne: If you have a cobbler in your area, we can ask our manufacturer if they would have rabbit fur to repair it.

Often rabbit fur fades if it rubs on anything like Jeans or loose pants.

Hello, I love my tan/navy moccasins bought in Aug ’22. I thought I was being gentle but the rabbit fur is wearing off and wondered if there is a way to replace it with new strips of rabbit skin with fur

    In response to Jackie Snyder:

When cleaning leather, you have to be careful, as oversaturating it will cause it to break down. I have found a pretty good method online; here is the link https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-White-Leather
Try to avoid the rabbit fur though, as it is so delicate, and should not be treated or cleaned with any type of product.

I got a pair of mukluks for Christmas size 10 wide. One boot feels a little tight. Does the leather stretch out
